The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of the cosmopolitan by studying orientalism, postcolonialism and nationalism with the issues of the minority race in China. The Orientalism written by Edward Said in 1978 can be referred to as a book that gives an impetus to the postcolonialism. His studies have not only provided a theoretical background for the postcolonialism theory but also presented a new perspective to the studies. The problems of the minority people in China become an international issue through the collaboration of minority people themselves and the third parties. The best-known postcolonial feminism theorist Gayatri C. Spivak argues that western-centric forms of feminism and its universalizing tendency can not represent every woman as a generalized notion to describe and define the reality of women in the third world. Postcolonialism feminism theories were emerged from the perspectives of postcolonialism linked to the contestation of colonialism’s discourse.
Subaltern people try to adapt to or resist the social and cultural conditions of the area residence. The problems of subaltern people are not just confined to a particular country, nation, group, but extended to the generally persistent problems worldwide. Ultimately subaltern people try to return to the history dominant position and to liberation by refusing nationalism which is an imitator of imperialism. As a result, nationalism which was constructed within the discursive structure of colonialism resulting from European modern orientalism, has contributed to reproducing and strengthening the dominant discourse of colonialism. The minority race in China means other races than the Han race sho governs China. The minority race plays an important role in the Chinese politics regarding geographical, resource and political factors. The Chinese Government adopts the policy to prevent the races from being devided.
In conclusion, This paper examines the concept of world literature as an alternative for overcoming orientalism and possibility from the perspectives of Said-Spivak. This paper focuses on the problem of world literature which is an important discussion as a discourse of resistance because it is a wide spectrum of methods of resistance by way of literature, transcending simple bifurcation.
