Korea has made phenomenal economic development based on assistance from abroad within a short period of time. Official development assistance provided from the international community was a decisive contribution to the development at the time. If so, what are the conditions for the success of official development assistance? In the realist perspective, international aid is provided on the basis of national interests on the part of donors, on the other hand, the liberal stance that sees international humanitarian aid in pure harmony in mind focuses on the possibility of a mutual gain between donors and recipient countries. International aid to Korea was able to maximize the effectiveness of economic development because US national interests to block the spread of communism during the Cold War and Japanese national interests for post-war economic reconstruction and export markets coincided with Korean needs to survive after the Korean War. For better performance in developmental assistance, it is necessary to develop a more sophisticated strategy from the realist perspective.
