본 연구는 사육 중인 젠투펭귄(Pygoscelis papua; n = 8)과 턱끈펭귄(Pygoscelis antarcticus; n = 4)을 대상으로 관람객의 소음이 이들 두 종의 행동 패턴에 영향을 미치는가를 조사하였다. 연구 결과 관람객의 수가 증가할수록 펭귄 사육실 외부의 소음(평균 음압, 최고 음압, 중간 주파수, 최고 주파수)이 현저히 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 관람객이 없는 월요일에는 평균 소음이 44.4 dB이었지만 평균관람객이 많은 토요일에는 평균 소음이 72.9 dB로 사람의 소음한계수치기준(70 dB)을 초과하였다. 이와 더불어 관람객 수의 증가에 따른 펭귄의 행동 패턴을 요인 별로 분석한 결과 관람객이 증가할수록 두 종에서 동일하게 수영하는 행동과 깃털을 고르는 행동이 유의하게 증가하였고, 지면에 눕는 행동이 감소하였다. 젠투펭귄은 둥지에 앉는 행동이 감소하였고, 턱끈펭귄은 눈을 맞는 행동이 감소하였다. 비록 단기간의 연구 결과이지만 이러한 인위적인 전시환경에 놓인 펭귄의 경우에 지속적인 소음과 같은 스트레스에 노출될 경우 행동 패턴에 변화가 있을 가능성이 있으며, 본 연구 결과는 향후 전시 동물의 스트레스 저감을 위한 사육장 개선 시 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
