Recent studies have shown that the airborne transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) cannot be ignored. Accordingly, researchers emphasized the importance of sufficient ventilation to supply fresh outdoor air for diluting the concentration of virus, and natural ventilation can be the easy and effective solution to prevent virus spread. In particular, virus infection may be susceptible to confined spaces and high occupancy density such as school classrooms. In response to the current COVID-19 situation, the government has issued a ventilation guideline for opening one-third of classroom windows, but the evidence is not sufficient. The aim of this study is to quantify the ventilation strategy to deal with COVID-19 situation by calculating the ventilation rate and infection probability.
The ventilation rates were calculated by the trace gas decay method. The infection probability related to airborne transmission of respiratory was quantified using the Wells-Riley equation. As a result, the ventilation rate was calculated with more than 6 ACH and 10 ACH at 15% and 30% window opening ratio, respectively, and infection probability was estimated with less than 1% for both. In the single-sided ventilation condition, the ventilation rate was 2~3 times lower than that of the cross ventilation, and the infection probability exceeded 1% when the exposure time exceeded 1 hour. Wearing a mask reduced the risk of infection by about 4 times compared to non-wearing condition.
