I examined the relation between Park Wan-seo’s short stories and novels describing ‘a brother’ and ‘a student movement’, using the notion of Robert Fairbairn and Martha Nussbaum’s ‘sense of guilt as a moral defense’. Park represented her betrayal of Marxist ideology in A Dry Season and Who Ate up All the Shinga? and sharply criticized hypocrisy within her mind. It could be explained as an imitation of her brother’s turn, who strongly influenced on her view of the world. According to Fairbairn, when a child can not integrate his/her parents’ good aspects and bad aspects, he/she usually tends to imitate parents’ bad aspects and feel guilty. Park chose to marry and she transferred into the category of the middle class. It resembled with her brother’s turn and thus it could be remain sense of guilt somewhere inside. Her middle class characters in Illustrations of the Past 1 and Diary of a man had a similar sense of guilt towards the students who participated in students movements in 80s.
Her catholic essays included this kind of the guilty as a moral defense. Park sought to the cause of her son’s death in her lack of love toward other people, and she attempted to read Bible to overcome the pain. She found the ethic of pity and the experience influenced on the writing of the short story, My latest Possession.
