The purpose of this study is to suggest strategies that can meet developmental challenges on children. To achieve the purpose, this study identifies children's developmental needs and definitional debates related to child development, examines the historical traditions of the field of early childhood and addresses selected adverse and positive influences on children"s development.
Five major adversities on children's development, often termed risk factors are the following; poverty, inadequate health and safety protection, violence, prenatal drug exposure, and substandard child care. Often termed protective factors, positive conditions include a combination of sustenance; significant relationships with available and caring adults; consistency and predictability in relationships, expectation, and limits; strong emotional ties within the family; regular acceptance and affirmation of actions; and variety of stimulating materials in family and school settings.
Consequently, what is essential to recognize about the conditions affecting all children's development is their implications. adults who strive to build children;s adaptability view children as resources, not problems, and create environments that protect them from adverse risks rather than attempting to 'fix' them. The following five suggestions provide a starting point for meeting these developmental challenges: first, teach coping skills to children; second, institute reform in schools and programs that serve poor children; third, provide teachers and caregivers with access to resources that protect children's health and safety; forth, prepare future and practicing teachers with the dispositions to work with children abused by violence and poverty; finally, develop nonauthoritarian teachers and administrators.
