Powered activated carbon(PAC), commonly used for the removal of dissolved organics, taste and odor from drinking water, has generated additional that can not be regenerated as spent granular activated carbon. This study examined the maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of three dewatered waterworks sludges(DWS) sampled from two water treatment plants located in D city. The experiments were carried out by batch mode using a 24-hour equilibrium time and a 0.1 ∼ 0.5 mm particle size. Fluoride removal was found to increase with increasing DWS dosage, but specific uptake of fluoride per mass of DWS was decreased in three DWS. Adsorption data were modeled using the Langmuir adsorption isotherms. The maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of DWS was found to be 0.31 ∼ 0.762 mg /g. The maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of DWS containing PAC(P-D) was about 2.4 times higher as compared to that of DWS without PAC(N-D). Conversely, the aluminum content of N-D was about 1.4 times higher as compared to that of P-D. These experiments demonstrated that the presence of activated carbon in the adsorption of fluoride played a positive role with the content of aluminum, and that P-D can be used for adsorption of fluoride from aqueous solutions.
