This study investigates what the Greco-Roman philosophers say about children and how patristics view children. Greco- Roman philosophers, such as Plato, Aristotle, and Quintilianus on the nature of children were surveyed. Clement, Origen, Chrysostom, and Augustine were researched for their patristic view.
A difference was found between the two groups. Greco-Roman philosophers thought children symbolized the absence of reason and physical weakness. Patristics believed children were simple, innocent, and pure morally. Even though Augustine asserted that children were sinners due to original sin, he emphasized that children were created in God's image.
In conclusion, the positive attitudes toward children from patristic teaching discovered should be applied to Christian education.
